Takeaways From Patriots Minicamp

The Patriots finished minicamp on Wednesday, and now the focus is on training camp. This was the most important offseason for this team in two decades. Not only because of all the free agents they singed, but Mac Jones the quarterback selected 15th overall in the NFL Draft. All eyes are on the quarterback position after a dismal performance from Cam Newton last year. As of right now it still looks like Cam Newton is the starter heading into training camp. Belichick spoke Wednesday ahead of the last practice saying

“We started with a foundation and a lot of individual fundamental type things and gradually built those into group settings and as you’ve seen the last couple of days, more team-oriented things, whether it be punt protection and blitz pickup and things like that, that are kind of moving forward that we didn’t engage in a couple of weeks ago, wouldn’t have been ready to deal with at that point.”

Cam Newton Is QB1

Cam Newton had his best practice of the day on Wednesday. While Mac Jones struggled but overall looked like the best quarterback the other two days. Newton has a full off-season and better talent around him to be better this year. There is no excuse for him to be bad. I think no matter how the rest of the quarterbacks look in training camp Cam Newton will start Week 1 to begin the season. Newton says the right things which make Belichick happy. Belichick says the same about Newton. No matter how training camp goes Newton starts the season.

Hunter Henry Will Be the Patriots Go to Tight End

The Patriots haven’t had a tight end since Rob Gronkowski left New England in 2019. They have struggled at the position until this year when they signed two. One of them Hunter Henry is ready to go. He’s enjoying his time so far in New England. He also had some interesting comments earlier this month.

“I’ve watched a lot of Gronk in the past two months. Obviously one of the best tight ends to play the game… It’s an honor to be in the same tight end room and try to continue that legacy of tight ends here. “It’s a winning culture, there’s tradition here, there’s a high level of expectations so I think a lot of us, including myself, are very excited to try to elevate ourselves to meet those expectations and this culture,” said Henry. “I’m excited to be here in his locker and then go to work every single day with these guys.”

No Gilmore No Problem?

Stephon Gilmore seems to be gone from the Patriots. Belichick wouldn’t comment on him at all yesterday. This means other guys will have to step up. J.C. Jackson will be the number one corner going into training camp, while Jalen Mills the free agent they signed, will fill other positions. The defense is solid especially with Dont’a Hightower back. He spoke the other day saying

“I’ve obviously been working at home. Whether or not being here or whatever, but it feels good to be on the field but it’s more about being in the locker room, being around these guys. I was in the house for an entire year, man.
