Patriots Minicamp: Mac Jones Looks Good, Stephon Gilmore Isn’t showing up

The Patriots started mandatory Minicamp this week. Mostly everyone was in attendance except for the starting cornerback Stephon Gilmore. and a few other players. Gilmore, though is holding out because of a contract dispute. He’s only supposed to make $7 million this season and isn’t happy about it. Meanwhile, the Patriots spent a ton in free agency. It looks like Gilmore has played his last snap with the Patriots as they will probably trade him before the season starts. Belichick was asked about Gilmore today. His answer “Yeah, I don’t expect him to be here and we’ll just focus on the guys that are here.”

Belichick Talks Minicamp: Doesn’t expect Gilmore To Attend.

Rookie quarterback Mac Jones is improving by the day which is a great sign. Cam Newton still has the starting job no matter how good Jones looks. There is no way Mac Jones plays Week 4 against Brady and the Buccaneers. There is still quite a ways to go before the start of the season. For Jones though him taking reps behind Newton to begin minicamp is a great start. It seems like he’s a fast learner. Belichick’s recent quote of Jones says a lot about his progress.

“I think Mac has a pretty good understanding of the things that we do,” He has to go out there and do them and get comfortable with them, so it’s a process, and we’ve had a number of other players at that quarterback position come in and go through that. Sometimes it starts a little slower and then picks up; sometimes it starts a little higher and slows down. We’ll just have to see how it goes, but he’s working hard.

“He puts in a lot of time and, certainly, giving his very best effort to do everything we’ve asked him to do and do it the way that we’ve asked him to do it, which is a great place to start. He’s earned a lot of respect for that, but he’s got a long way to go, and we’ll see how it goes.”
