Prior to last night’s 4-0 over the New York Rangers, the Boston Bruins announced their 2021-21 Season Awards.
LEADING THE WAY
Forward Brad Marchand was the recipient of the Eddie Shore Award. Selected by the “Gallery Gods”, this award goes to the player that demonstrates exceptional hustle and determination throughout the season. The left winger has been having quite the season thus far as he leads the team in goals (27), assists (36) and points (63). He recently hit a milestone on May 3rd as he played his 800th career NHL game.
The 32-year-old left winger was also the recipient of the Elizabeth Dufresne Trophy. This award goes to the player who has been outstanding on home ice. So far Marchand has a total of 15 goals and 18 assists through 23 games. As one of the key players that make up that dangerous top line, Marchand has quickly shown the league just how elite he really is (much to chagrin of other teams).
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
The John P. Bucyk Award goes to Charlie Coyle for his contributions to the local Boston Community. The Weymouth, MA native has been involved with many charities, education, military and youth hockey initiatives. A special relationship with five-year-old Quinn Waters has been highlighted extensively. His “Quinndow” has been visited by Coyle and many other local Boston personalities. Due to his compromised system as he continues to battle brain cancer, Waters was unable to leave his home. However, Quinn was able to make a special trip to the TD Garden to drop the puck for Hockey Fights Cancer night alongside Coyle.
Lastly, local radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub awarded their Three Stars to the top performers on home ice. Unsurprisingly the First Star goes to Brad Marchand as he continues to lead the team in all aspects including shorthanded goals (4) and game-winning goals (5). Fellow linemate and Captain of the Boston Bruins Patrice Bergeron was awarded the Second Star. Bergeron has recorded another 20+ goal season and is second on the team with 21 goals and 46 points. He also leads the team with seven powerplay goals. With 13 goals and 19 assists since joining the team, Craig Smith has been named Third Star. He continues to make plays and rack up goals as displayed most recently during the May 1st game against the Buffalo Sabres where he recorded his second career hat trick.
