For a long time the Patriots saying was “ignore the noise.” Now, the opposite has happened. The Patriots, for the first time in two decades listened to the noise. The main reason, because they didn’t have Tom Brady to cover the mistakes anymore for the entire team. The drafts had been terrible, they didn’t have any tight ends, and didn’t have a plan at quarterback. Winning was a thing of the past in 2020. The Patriots went 7-9 and got exposed across the board. They were getting killed by the media and fans. They spent a ton in free agency and got two legit tight ends and receivers. The upgraded their defense, and selected Mac Jones at pick 15 in the NFL Draft.
Patriots Select Mac Jones With The 15th Pick
Belichick hated taking Jones at 15. If he had it his way he would’ve traded down or selected someone on defense. He listened to the Owner Robert Kraft who wanted to take Jones. Belichick doesn’t like taking quarterbacks high but saw the pressure from Kraft, the media, and the fans. He went so far as to say Cam Newton is the quarterback of this team. That is a lot different from what he said when Jimmy Garoppolo was taken in 2014.“The situation we have at quarterback, we felt as an organization that we needed to address that to some degree in the future, See how that all works. I think you’re better being early rather than late at that position.” Belichick said at the time.VIA MASSLIVE
This is what he said when Mac Jones was taken “Cam (Newton)’s our quarterback, Whatever time Jarrett (Stidham) or Mac are ready to challenge and compete, we’ll see how that goes. But right now for Mac, he’s just got a lot of learning in front of him. I know he’s very anxious to get going and get started on it Mac was available at our pick, and he was a guy we spent a lot of time with. Felt like that was the best pick at that time for us, Look forward to working with him. He’s a smart kid. He’s been in a system that’s similar to ours. We’ve had a lot of good conversations with him. I think he’ll be able to process the offense. It’s obviously going to take a lot of time. See how it goes.” Belichick said the other night. We can clearly tell which one was his decision and which one was made due to pressure.VIA NFL .COM
Patriots Made The Right Choice
The Patriots had no choice but to take Jones at 15 when he was still on the board. They need a franchise quarterback and who knows if this is the answer. It will be an exciting training camp and preseason to see which quarterback takes the reigns. They had it’s clearly certain they want a pocket passer more so than a mobile quarterback with the offseason. If Jones beats out Newton or Stidham for the starting job good for him. If he beats Stidham for the backup then it’s clear that Robert Kraft made the right choice at 15. Overall, the Patriots needed to have a good draft and so far it’s been a good one.
