It seems like Cam Newton was the plan all along for the Patriots. Back in March when Brady left for Tampa, Rumors were that Belichick liked Cam Newton and was interested. During the NFL Draft, they didn’t draft a quarterback and went out and got Brian Hoyer in free agency. The talk was it was Jarrett Stidham’s team and Hoyer would possibly be the backup. However, as the pandemic kept players from having OTAs, minicamp, or entering the facility, Cam Newton was still out there and the price for him kept falling. At the beginning of July Newton was still out there and the fit worked, Cam Newton became a Patriot.
Newton’s energy and positive vibes are key to this Patriots team. On and off the field he’s motivated to be the best quarterback he can be. Will this be a long run with Cam Newton and the Patriots? You can’t rule anything out with Belichick. Jarrett Stidham isn’t ready for primetime yet and needs another year. Friday the Patriots held a scrimmage and Newton was with the one’s you know what that means. This is Newton’s team with just two weeks until the Patriots open with the Dolphins.
With no preseason games, Belichick should start the former MVP over Stidham. With Stidham hurt and having a rocky training camp, it’s clear he’s still trying to get better each day. Newton has picked up the offense well so far in camp and we’ll see how it translates onto the field. Newton seems to be building a great bond with Edelman, Sanu, Harry, and others. With September right around the corner, it looks like things will start heating up. Newton will get more time with the ones and Stidham and Hoyer will compete for the backup spot. Who knows Belichick could carry three quarterbacks this season.
