New England Patriots running back Sony Michel reportedly underwent surgery in May. The surgery was on his foot, and was supposedly done to relieve discomfort. Despite the flashes of talent he displays, this is not the first time that Michel has dealt with injuries.
Michel has returned to the Patriots team facility to rehab and stay in shape for the season. Depending on his progress, he could return in time for training camp in late July. So, if it's any consolation, he certainly chose the right time to have this procedure done.
Sony Michel has been dealing with knee injuries for his entire professional career so far. There was even a hint of it in college as well, but not to the extent it has begun to show. Luckily, despite the multiple knee injuries, he has only missed three games so far. This is even more important considering he was the Pats #1 running back since he was drafted.
Michel is set to break out next year, provided that he stays relatively healthy. With Brady gone the offense should expect huge changes to their style and play calling. Sony will most likely be relied upon more, as the run game will need to support first year starter Jarrett Stidham. Michel already saw an increase in responsibility last year, though failed to meet standards. But who could blame him? He had to deal with injuries to the blocking game, AND a weak passing game.
Now with a healthy and more experienced offensive line, in addition to a veteran fullback and rejuvenated passing game, Michel has the perfect opportunity to show everybody what he's got. While it is worrying to see ANOTHER injury, Michel has the talent and opportunity to prove his worth. Now it is just only a matter of time.
