Kirk Minihane criticized Fox News host Laura Ingraham for her hypocritical take on athletes sharing political thoughts. Friday on his Barstool Sports podcast, Minihane noticed an inconsistency in Ingraham’s stance regarding Drew Brees’ controversial statements.
Ingraham has said before she does not want to hear celebrities give their opinions on politics. She wrote a book on the subject in 2003 titled, “Shut Up and Sing: How Elites from Hollywood, Politics, and the Media are Subverting America”.
In 2018, Ingraham hosted a segment where she also added athletes into this category. She mocked LeBron James and Kevin Durant for speaking out against President Trump. She did not believe people should value their political thoughts.
“It’s always unwise to seek political advice from someone who gets paid $100 million dollars a year to bounce a ball,” Ingraham said on her Fox News program The Ingraham Angle. “Oh and LeBron and Kevin, you’re great players, but no one voted for you. So keep the political commentary to yourself, or as someone once said, shut up and dribble.”
Surely she would have the same response when Drew Brees would step into the political arena. Not exactly.
“Well he’s allowed to have his view about what kneeling and the flag means to him,” Ingraham said on Fox. “I mean, he’s a person. He has some worth, I would imagine. This is beyond football.”
It is safe to say she will not be coining the phrase “Shut up and pass” at this time. Ingraham is alright with athletes sharing their thoughts, just as long as they align with her beliefs.
Kirk Minihane, who loves nothing more than pointing out media hypocrisy, was not about to let this pitch go by.
“Laura Ingraham is a f**king total hypocritical phony,” Minihane said on The Kirk Minihane Show. “Where she tells LeBron James ‘Shut up and dribble’, but when Drew Brees does it it’s like, 'Well he has a right to his opinion’. Oh I wonder why that is?”
Minihane then pontificates why Ingraham would have different standards for different athletes.
“I am not saying it’s race-based, I’m actually not,” Minihand said. “But it’s obviously a right/left thing. Shut up and dribble LeBron, but Bress, who throws a ball, is allowed to have his opinion? It’s just bulls**t.”
Unlike many in the media, Minihane is not coming into this debate with a political agenda. People from both sides of the political aisle have appeared on his show. Not many podcasts would have cordial conversations with both Donald Trump Jr. and Robert Littal.
As a media member, Laura Ingraham should want as many people as possible voicing their opinions. Nobody should be for shutting down the speech of citizens because of their profession. Broadcasters especially should be against censorship, not encouraging it.
If Ingraham does not want to hear athletes give their political opinions, then she needs to be consistent on that stance. She was wrong telling Lebron to shut up while also telling Brees to speak up.
