Charity At Home | Zdeno Chara

The Boston Bruins organization always prides itself in their charitable endeavors, and Captain Zdeno Chara has always been on the forefront. In a special and surprising ceremony, New Balance and Warrior Hockey honored the 42-year-old defenseman for his continued dedication in the Boston Community.

Chara hit a personal milestone when he reached his 1,500 NHL games, and for Big Z the ceremony was both an honor and humbling experience:

Big Man, Big Heart

Being heavily involved within the community is nothing new for Chara, as he partnered up with New Balance in a shoe drive benefiting those in need throughout Boston and his native Slovakia. Last year, the drive was part of the charity Soles4Souls, which is based out of Nashville, Tennessee. Chara personally bought and donated $7,500 worth of New Balance shoes.

For the past four years, Chara has been involved with the annual Boston Bruins PJ Drive. Last year, more the 21,000 pairs of pj's were collected. This year's 13th annual drive kicked off on February 1st and runs through March 15th. The team, along with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, Wonderfund and Cradles to Crayons© have teamed up to collect much needed pajamas for children that are in tough living situations.

The Captain also teamed up with Boston Mayor Marty Walsh (who was also on hand during the special ceremony honoring Chara) in collecting over 3,000 pairs of socks that was distributed to local shelters.

For all that he does, its no wonder that the city of Boston wanted to recognize the beloved and respected defenseman. Along with New Balance, Warrior Hockey presented Chara with custom gold gloves and donated $10,000 dollars to the Italian Home for Children. After speaking about the tremendous impact on Boston, Mayor Marty Walsh presented Big Z with a street sign.
