The game of chicken between Andrew Friedman and Chaim Bloom appears to be over. And it’s not one of them who blinked. That would be Thad Levine, the Minnesota Twins GM. Jordan Balazovic will replace Brusdar Graterol in the Mookie Betts, David Price, Alex Verdugo, Kenta Maeda three team deal.
Apparently the Major League Player’s Association’s feeling on the matter moved things along:
Meanwhile Scott Boras’ contributions were superfluous.
Jordan Balazovic is the fourth ranked Twins prospect, right behind (well, before all this) the third ranked Brusdar Graterol. Balazovic is a 20 year old starter who went 8-5 with a 2.69 ERA over 19 games (18 starts) in low and mid A ball last year. That included 12.4 K/9, a mark Graterol never met in the minors. Just as Graterol would’ve been, Balazovic will be at the top, if not top three, in the Red Sox minor league system as soon as he arrives.
A short glimpse into his mindset shows he’s more well rounded than the two pitch Graterol:
“I love being a starter,” Balazovic said. “I’m not one of those guys who is going to blow hitters away by throwing 100. I mix pitches. Some nights, it’s a lot of fastballs. Other nights, more breaking pitches. Whatever’s working. “Balazovic to Patrick Reusse Of The Minneapolis The Star Tribune
The announcement of this change and the deal being done should be coming sometime within the next 24 hours. Balazovic’s medicals are being checked as you read, and there are no red flags here.
Are you tired yet? And spring training hasn’t even officially started.
