The Boston Celtics currently sit at 31-15 this season. For those keeping track at home, that’s a little bit more than halfway through the regular season. They are the four seed in the Eastern Conference and 1.5 games out of the second seed in the playoffs. It’s been fun to watch this group of guys compete night in and night out. So with the season a little more than halfway through, let’s take a look back at the top Celtics wins so far this season.
1/28 @ Miami: Boston 109 Miami 101
This was last night, and the Celtics came to play. The “hospital Celtics” came into full force. Jayson Tatum was out. Enes Kanter was out. Kemba had a bit of an off game for him. But the Celtics found a way to beat a good Miami Heat team on the road. Gordon Hayward had one of his best games of the season, with 29 points and nine rebounds. Jaylen Brown also stepped up with 25 points and five assists. This was a game the Celtics wouldn’t have been blamed for if they lost. They had everything going against them. But this year’s team is tough and resilient. This win pulls the Celtics to a half game behind Miami for the three seed in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics are up two games to none in the season series with two games remaining.
10/25 vs. Toronto: Celtics 112 Raptors 106
This was the Celtics first win of the 2019-2020 season. They were coming off of an unimpressive opening night loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. The Raptors were coming in as the defending NBA champions from the season before. Obviously, Kawhi Leonard is gone and playing in LA. But they still have Pascal Siakam, who is turning into a star before our eyes. He finished this game with 33 points. However, the Celtics were just a little bit better and maybe even a bit more motivated to win this game. Led by the two J’s putting up 25 points, nine rebounds, and four assists a piece, the Celtics were able to get into the win column. The Raptors currently own the two seed in the Eastern Conference, but that doesn’t really scare me. The Celtics also beat the Raptors on Christmas in Toronto. That puts the Celtics up in the season series 2-1 (Toronto won in Boston on 12/28), with one game remaining on March 20th.
10/30 vs. Milwaukee: Celtics 116 Bucks 105
The Milwaukee Bucks are far and away the best team in the Eastern Conference. They may even be the best team in the NBA. But on October 30th the Celtics found a way to beat the Bucks. The Bucks were up 16 at halftime. 16 points! But the Celtics used a 38 point third quarter to put them ahead by four and ultimately win the game. Kemba Walker was the star in this one, with 32 points and gave the city of Boston a reason to get behind him this season. Jayson Tatum added 25, and Gordon Hayward added 21 as well. Jaylen Brown didn’t even play in this game! Sure, the Bucks got their revenge on January 16th, winning 128-123. But,the Celtics know they can compete with Milwaukee. If these two meet in the Eastern Conference finals, I’m liking the Celtics chances to go toe to toe with Giannis and the Bucks.
These are only a few games that are worth noting in their season so far. They’ve beaten a LeBron-Anthony Davis Lakers team at home. There was the Spurs game on the road that was a remarkable win in itself. But the best part about all of this? The Celtics are just getting started on their second half, and they have a lot of people buying into them now as opposed to the start of the season. Let’s go Celtics!
