Patriot fans can't just blame the officials
The Patriots have had an up and down year. The offense has struggled repeatedly, and the team itself has been bad these last few weeks. The offense has been worse than the defense, and they can't seem to fix their mistakes and be consistent. The officials were bad Sunday, but the Patriots lost the game by halftime. They could get nothing going except for the flea-flicker at the beginning of the game to Julian Edelman for a touchdown. After that the offensive line crashed, Sony Michel could get nothing going, receivers were dropping passes and Brady threw some questionable balls.
The Patriots first-round picks are awful
The Patriots first-round draft picks for the last two years have had little to no production. Every time Michel gets the ball he doesn't set his feet and runs right into the defense for little to no yards. Meanwhile, when James White gets the ball in the backfield he finds the holes and gets decent yardage. They really should use White as the main guy because it seems that he knows what he's doing. N'Keal Harry has done nothing either accept one touchdown catch against the Cowboys, and Sunday when he scored but was ruled that he stepped out on the three-yard line. It also didn't help that he's missed half the season because of injury.
The Patriots will not win any games when their receivers only have one reception outside Julian Edelman. Edelman gets double covered all the time, and he had eight receptions on Sunday. Jakobi Meyers, Mohamed Sanu, N'Keal Harry, Benjamin Watson, and Sony Michel all had one reception the entire game. Matt Lacosse had two receptions. Regardless of the officials, they aren't going to win games in January when the guys besides Edelman can't catch the ball. Also, Phillip Dorsett had zero catches Sunday, so the two other receivers they rely on had a combined one catch between Sanu and Dorsett. That is not good enough to win in January with the game on the line.
Probably the worst offense for the Patriots since 2002.
It used to be Brady could make an average receiver more than decent. However, this group just doesn't get it besides Edelman. Yes, Brady is at fault too because he's the quarterback, and can't make bad decisions with the football. He only passed for 169 yards Sunday. That is the third time this season he's been held below 200 yards passing this season. The Patriots couldn't recover from their awful first half, and needed trick plays to get anything going. I miss the days when Brady would just throw the ball to the open receiver and they wouldn't be running the wrong route or they would catch the ball.
This team is not like last year, and not having Gronkowski for blocking is huge. The offense is running out of time to figure this out with January right around the corner. It's not just Sunday. The offense has been struggling like this for weeks now. They better fix it soon or they'll be hosting a playoff game and losing the AFC Championship when they travel to Baltimore.
