Hope everyone is enjoying their victory Monday as Patriots fans! The Patriots came into Gillette Stadium looking to improve to 3-0 against the New York Jets. The Patriots ended up defeating the Jets rather easily, 30-14. It wasn’t perfect, but the Pats are looking very good heading into Buffalo in week four. But before we move on to Buffalo, let’s recap the Jets game quickly. Let’s look at three ups and three downs from the Jets-Patriots game.
Up: The Patriots Defense
This Patriots defense continues to amaze week in and week out. The defense wasn’t even responsible for the 14 points given up! They held Luke Falk to under 100 passing yard total. Le’Veon Bell? Yeah, he only had 35 rushing yards on 18 carries, which is an average of 1.9 yards per rush. Devin McCourty also had an interception in the game as well. The Patriots could have a potential challenge as they face the undefeated Buffalo Bills in Buffalo. So, we’ll see just how good this Patriots defense can be when they start facing legitimate offenses.
Down: Gunner Olszewski
It’s never a good thing to fumble the ball when you play for Bill Belichick. It’s even worse when you’re one of the new guys on the team. Gunner Olszewski has been one of the underdogs this whole season as he found himself on the Patriots roster in week one after an impressive pre-season. Olszewski was back to receive a punt with the Patriots up 30-0 at that point. He proceeded to fumble it and the Jets recovered in the endzone for the score, giving up the first Patriots’ touchdown of the season to an opponent. I give Gunner credit though, he answered the questions about it after the game. It was a mistake, they happen in this league. I’d be very surprised if Olszewski’s playing time gets diminished for one mistake in a blowout type of game.
Up: Josh Gordon
Josh Gordon was once again a significant piece in the Pats’ passing attack. Gordon finished the game with six receptions for 83 yards. One of those catches was the incredible grab shown above. What was inspiring about Gordon yesterday is that he was being productive while having a dislocated finger. Seriously, he dislocated it during the game and needed his hand to be taped up. Gordon has been fighting all of his life, he even acknowledged that in his postgame press conference. It is so refreshing to see Gordon healthy, happy, and being a part of this Patriots team. Now with Antonio Brown out of the picture for good, Gordon will once again be looked at as a key part to this Patriots offensive success.
Down: Jarrett Stidham
With the Patriots up 30-7 late in the fourth quarter, rookie backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham got his opportunity to play in an actual NFL game. People were very excited about Stidham after seeing him in the pre-season. His regular season debut wasn’t great, as he missed Brandon Bolden on an easy pass and Jamal Adams took it back the other way for a touchdown. Stidham soon found himself back on the bench. If Patriots fans are going to feel confident once Tom Brady leaves the league for good, Stidham has to do better. Granted, it was only one throw; but he has to be better when given an opportunity.
Up: Phillip Dorsett
Another day, another Phillip Dorsett touchdown reception. Dorsett has been the under the radar receiver that keeps producing for the Patriots when his number is called. He had six receptions for 53 yards and one of those was for an early touchdown. People wondered where Dorsett would fit in with Antonio Brown in the picture. Now, people are probably happy to see Dorsett scoring touchdowns while Brown has his own off the field issues to deal with at the moment. Brady and Dorsett have a connection that seems to increase with every week passing. Keep Dorsett in a Patriots uniform by any means necessary!
Down: Stephen Gostkowski
Yes, Stephen Gostkowski made his only field goal attempt and three extra points. But, he still missed the first one. He needs to start being more consistent. Even if the Patriots need to bring somebody in to challenge Gostkowski for his job, then do it. I’m starting to believe it’s something mental with Gostkowski. Will he make big kicks in the future? We’ll have to wait to find out.
Another good win for the Patriots as they move to 3-0! They are back at it next Sunday in Buffalo for the chance to move to 4-0 on the young season. There was a lot of good to take from the game. But, you have to feel bad for Jets for having to go to New England with a third string quarterback. It’s almost not even fair. Oh well. Time to get ready for the next challenge ahead.
