2019 Red Sox Players That Should Be Brought Back In 2020

With the 2019 season winding down, the Boston Red Sox are more than likely not making the postseason. That means that Red Sox fans should be looking forward to the 2020 season. There are multiple names on the Red Sox that have the opportunity to explore free agency this winter. Who should the Red Sox strongly push to stay aboard? Are there any players that the Red Sox might like to see go? While everyone has their brains scrambling while thinking of players, lets take a look at some of the current Red Sox players that should be brought back for the 2020 season.

J.D. Martinez (Player Option)

This is the most obvious choice to bring back next season. J.D. Martinez is the power that the Red Sox lacked back in the 2017 season. Martinez has enjoyed himself in the middle of the Red Sox lineup. He’s been an All Star in both seasons. He has also hit 77 home runs, along with 223 RBI’s. It’s safe to say that the deal has been successful thus far for both sides. He has a player option which he can opt out of, thus making him a free agent. My opinion? Both sides want to continue on with Martinez still being a part of the Red Sox. If the Red Sox let him go, that makes signing Mookie Betts that much more crucial. But, we’ll talk about Mookie another day. Bottom line: keep J.D. in a Sox uniform by any means necessary!

Brock Holt

This one is more of a clubhouse move than anything. I don’t think you can find anyone that can say a bad thing about Brock Holt. He is one of the most well-liked players in the organization. He does a lot of work for the Jimmy Fund that is appreciated by fans. Plus when he gets going with his bat he’s a valuable asset to the Red Sox lineup. This season alone, he’s hitting for a solid .323 average. He was an All-Star in 2015. He had a huge American League Division series last year against the Yankees. What more do you need to be convinced that Holt should stick around? Now, a team could see the same value and offer Holt more money. But I think Holt still wants to be with the Red Sox. You take away Holt, you take away a huge piece of the Red Sox heart.

Nobody Else!

There is nobody else that the Red Sox should consider from their free agency list. Steve Pearce had a great October in 2018. As far as 2019 goes, he has been injury-plagued. The Red Sox brought back Pearce on a cheap one year deal, so he most likely won’t be back. Mitch Moreland started off hot to begin the 2019 season. But ever since coming back from injury, he has not been the same. The other guys like Chris Owings or Erasmo Ramirez won’t be back in any way, shape, or form. Re-sign Martinez and Holt and be content with those signings.

The Red Sox have some choices to make this off-season. There are the guys that are necessary to bring back, and others that are not. It’s always fun to speculate what will happen. The 2020 Red Sox season could very well be a fun one. The 2019 season? Not great!
