Jarrett Stidham could be good for the Patriots
As the Patriots get ready for another season starting next Sunday night, they made the necessary roster cuts on Saturday. Rookie quarterback Jarrett Stidham made the team, and will back up Tom Brady. He beat Brian Hoyer for the number two spot. Stidham had himself a great preseason. He had the best preseason for a rookie quarterback since Belichick has been a head coach. Stidham passed for 731 yards and four touchdowns with only one interception. Yes, it's early, but it's a great sign and Belichick saw something in him for possibly the future as a quarterback for the Patriots.
Stidham knows he has a lot of work to do
Ever since Garoppolo was traded they've been searching for the next quarterback. Brady doesn't seem to be retiring anytime soon, but with Stidham the number two quarterback he can learn from Brady and create his own winning style. He's very mobile in the pocket and gets the ball out quick. He still, however, has a long way to go, but he's off to a great start. At this point he can only get better, and when the time's right he'll get the chance to start for either the Patriots or another team. That all depends on Brady's future after this season.
He had a great preseason
One thing Belichick does well is planning ahead while also trying to win this season. That is a plus for Stidham as he learns the Patriots style and life in the NFL. He really has the best organization to learn from. They've won six Super Bowls and are always in the AFC Championship game. They know what team is and Stidham could become a great leader someday for a team. After Sunday's Practice Stidham talked to reporters about being the backup quarterback.
He knows his role as a backup to Brady
“I obviously got the news that I’m the No. 2 guy, I’m very excited about this role, obviously. But (I’m) getting back to work and working as hard as I ever have and trying to do everything I can to help out this team and to help Tom out. That’s my job. This is obviously a huge opportunity for me, but the work’s not done, I’ve got to continue to come in here and work my butt off every day to make sure that I can continue to get better and do whatever I can to help this team out. … My job, obviously, as the backup quarterback is to be ready. But I’ve also got to give the defense a great look, so I’m just trying to do everything I can to make sure I’m helping those guys out, as well.”
It's good Stidham knows his potential on this team, but also is humble about it. He's backing up the greatest quarterback of all time, which brings high expectations for obvious reasons. He knows he has to work hard and be the best backup he can be. He also will be a great teammate in the locker room. When his time comes to step up and be the starter he will. But for now, he's just got to watch and do what he's got to do.
